About Old South Restaurant

In the heart of Russellville, a historic gem was born - The Old South Restaurant. Established at 1330 East Main St., this beloved establishment was granted a spot on the National Register of Historic Places on September 15, 1999, a momentous occasion celebrated by Cathy Slater, the state historic preservation officer of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.

Crafted by William E. Stell, owner of the National Glass and Manufacturing Company of Fort Smith, the Old South Restaurant emerged in 1947 under the vision of Russellville businessman Woody Mays. Its sleek Art Modern-style design, a hallmark of Stell's modular diner concept, captured the essence of innovation and style.

Nestled along Arkansas Highway 64, the diner stood as a beacon of hospitality on the journey from Tennessee to Oklahoma, offering comfort and sustenance to travelers in need, day and night.

Despite facing a devastating fire in June 2023 that reduced the iconic building on West Main Street to ashes, the spirit of the Old South prevailed. With the unwavering support of the community, the restaurant found a new home at 105 East Harrell Drive, breathing new life into cherished memories. The original sign from the past was proudly relocated to the new location, bridging the gap between history and modernity. While the setting may have changed, the menu still boasts the timeless flavors that have delighted patrons for generations, including the renowned cream soups and salad dressings crafted by R. C. Sturb for the inaugural Old South Restaurant in Fort Smith.
